Aim

This workshop is designed to equip you with the necessary tools and knowledge to create and grow an environmentally friendly business!

Through this workshop, you will learn how to combine sustainability with your business and set up a successful business model. More specifically, we will cover the following topics:

1. Basic marketing principles, with emphasis on sustainability.
2. Practical tools for designing sustainable marketing strategies.
3. Development of strategic plans for promoting and marketing environmentally friendly products and services.

Methods

The workshop will be interactive, combining theory with practice! Alongside the theoretical content, tailored exercises will be provided for all levels, helping you develop your own marketing plan.

You will also have the opportunity to interact with people who face similar challenges. During the workshop, you’ll share your own experiences and learn from the experiences of others. Through constructive dialogue, you’ll exchange ideas and explore potential solutions to common challenges.

Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of at least six hours of training, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from Frederick University.

Trainers

The lead trainer for the workshop will be Dr. Nasia Tziorgi, Lecturer in Marketing at the Department of Business Administration.

Cost

The workshop is organized within the framework of the Pandoteira Project and will be offered completely free of charge. The project is co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE Programme.

Trail “Teisia tis Madaris”
Hike begins at 10:00 am

During the hike, members of the Pandoteira project team will inform us about the protected areas of Cyprus, the flora, fauna and avifauna that can be found in the specific protected area, as well as its unique geology.

The trail is considered easy. It’s a 3 km long, circular trail and it will take us approximately 2 hours to complete the hike, including the information stops.

Points of interest

The route offers stunning views of Akrotiri and the Limassol salt marsh, as well as Pentadaktylos, Kyrenia and Morphou Bay. We will walk among junipers and endemic golden oaks, while observing the wildflowers of the season, such as orchids. We will also learn about the different bird species of the area and we might be lucky enough to observe certain species, such as the Bonelli’s Eagle, the Cyprus Wheatear, the Cyprus Jay, the Cyprus Coal Tit and the Short-toed Treecreeper.

Lastly, a few short stops will allow us to observe points of natural and geological interest. Did you know that…

• The protected areas “SAC Madari – Papoutsa” and “SPA Vounokorfes Madaris – Papoutsas”, within which the trail is located, are home to 40 of the 131 endemic plant species of Cyprus.
• The areas are also home to many migratory and other important bird species that nest there.
• The entire route around “Teisia tis Madaris” trail presents igneous rocks and is one of the most impressive appearances of this type of rock. The rock formations, which are almost vertical, emerge like walls on the mountain peaks.

Refreshments will be offered at the end of the hike.

The educational hike will be offered by members of our team, from Terra Cypria and BirdLife Cyprus.

Kionia Picnic Site
Meeting time: 9:30

Through games and interactive activities, you’ll get to know the different reptile species of Cyprus, learn why there’s no need to fear them, how to identify them, and how to behave safely in nature. Come on your own, with your family, or with friends, and enjoy a beautiful morning outdoors with the Pandoteira team!

The day’s activities will be offered by members of our team from Terra Cypria and the Open University of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Cyprus Herpetological Society.

Activities at the picnic site (9:30 – 11:00)

At the Kionia Picnic Site, we’ll have three activity stations where you can learn:

• How to identify the different species of reptiles and how to spot them safely.
• Basic first aid in nature and ways to prevent accidents.
• How to behave properly and respectfully towards reptiles.

These activities will conclude at 11:00, when we will recharge with a refreshing juice and move on to the second part of the experience!

Hike or crafts? (11:30 – 13:00)

If you’re up for a hike, join our team on the Kionia – Prophitis Ilias nature trail, where we’ll enjoy nature together while observing and identifying reptiles. The hike will begin at 11:30 from the picnic site and last about one hour, as we won’t walk the entire trail. We will return to the picnic site by 13:00.

The hike is also suitable for children aged 7 and above.

For children and adults who prefer not to hike, we will offer crafts at the picnic site until the hikers return. Children staying for crafts must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday May 24th – Educational hike with a twist (Cape Greco)

Join us on this educational hike on an impressive trail at Cape Greco! Along the way, we will encounter unique marine fossils, majestic rock formations, and remarkable biodiversity. This natural fusion, forms the stunning coastline of Cape Greco. During the hike, members of our team will share fascinating insights into the unique flora and fauna of the area, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. The hike will lead us to the top of the trail, where we’ll have the chance to enjoy a breathtaking sunset by the sea, accompanied by the sounds of live, unplugged traditional music!

The hike will begin at 17:30 and it will be completed at 20:30 with our return to the same location.

Trail: Combination of “ Kavos” and “Sea Caves”
Degree of difficulty: 2 (medium). It is not recommended for children under the age of 12.

Sunday May 25th – Thalassa Museum (Ayia Napa)

From 9:30 to 13:00, you will be able to participate in a number of activities, both inside and outside the museum. Click here to view the agenda.

The day’s activities include:

1.Bird ringing and bird release (registration required)

Join us for a live bird ringing demonstration, featuring birds that were cared for and rehabilitated at the Game and Fauna Service’s Rehabilitation Centre! Learn about the importance of bird ringing in monitoring bird populations, as well as the efforts made to rehabilitate them. The activity will conclude with the release of the birds.

2.Interactive educational games related to sea life

Through fun educational games, children will explore the secrets of the lives of sea turtles and mediterranean seals. They will learn about the species’ circle of life, their nutrition, as well as the dangers and threats they face in the Mediterranean.

This activity includes games suitable for children from Kindergarten to Middle School.

3.Treasure hunt (registration required)

Rumor has it that a mysterious artifact is hidden somewhere in the museum—one that nobody has managed to find… yet. Follow the clues concealed within the exhibits, solve the riddles scattered throughout the museum, and you just might be the lucky one to uncover the lost relic! If it’s discovered in time, it will be displayed for everyone to see during the museum’s 20th anniversary celebration!
This activity is designed for children aged 8 to 12.

4.Theatre workshop (registration required)

In this theatre-educational program, children will have the chance to become environmental superheroes! They’ll take part in an interactive experience that combines theatre techniques, improvisation, role-playing, and group expression—while exploring important environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, recycling, and the protection of living organisms.

This workshop is designed for children aged 6 to 12.

5.Thalassa Museum guided tour (registration required)

Through the museum’s exhibits, we’ll explore the rich biodiversity of marine ecosystems and the interaction between humans and the aquatic environment—from antiquity to the present day. The museum also features paleontological and archaeological findings, as well as exhibits on maritime history, culture, and art.

A specialized guide will lead us on this journey of discovery, highlighting the importance of the sea throughout the history of our island!

6.Traditional carrot spoon sweet making

Have you ever tried carrot spoon sweet? If not, this is the perfect opportunity to both make and taste it! Carrot spoon sweet belongs to the vast range of traditional spoon sweets and originates from the community of Liopetri. We will have with us a local artisan who will guide us through the process of preparing this delicious treat!

7.Documentary screening

Screening of short documentaries dedicated to the sea and the Natura 2000 areas. The documentaries highlight the beauty and importance of Natura 2000 areas, as well as the conservation actions implemented under the Pandoteira project. The screening will run continuously throughout the event.
The Natura Day celebration is led by Terra Cypria and all activities are offered free of charge, within the framework of the Pandoteira project.

The activity of crafting and playing “pithkiavli” has been cancelled.

Register now for this unique birdwatching experience in Peyia, where you will have the chance to:

• Learn about two magnificent seabirds – the European Shag and the Yellow-legged Gull.
• Discover the monitoring work our team conducts for these bird species.
• Take part in the bird counting process yourself!

Μembers of our team, from the Game and Fauna Service and BirdLife Cyprus, will be there to assist you in observing the birds in their natural habitat, through telescopes and binoculars. You will also learn about the importance of placing tracking devices on birds.

How about a scientific boat ride?

During the event, a small boat will be making short trips around the island of Geronisos, maintaining a safe distance to avoid disturbing the birds. From the boat, you can observe these fascinating seabirds from a different perspective. Spaces are very limited, so registration is essential. Book your seat now!

Creative activities for children

Kids will not only enjoy birdwatching, but they will also be able to engage in creative activities and crafts, with the guidance of members of our team from Terra Cypria. See the exact location for the birdwatching and crafts here.

Why does the Pandoteira project study European Shags and Yellow-legged Gulls?

Cyprus is home to the Shag subspecies Gulosus aristotelis desmarestii, which nests only in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Unfortunately, the global population of the species has suffered a significant decline in the last 30 years, which is why our contribution to its protection is required.

European Shags and Yellow-legged Gulls, like many bird species, serve as biodiversity indicators. Their population trends can provide valuable insights into the overall health of Cyprus’ marine and coastal ecosystems. Significant changes in their numbers may reflect broader environmental shifts, such as fish population changes or pollution impacts. By studying these birds, we can take action to protect both wildlife and humans.

The Pandoteira project focuses on managing the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus. Its purpose is to make the Natura 2000 network more effective and functional, as well as sustainable. The project is co-funded by the EU’s LIFE Programme, the coordinating beneficiary is the Department of Environment, while the consortium also includes 13 associated beneficiaries from public bodies, academic institutions, non-governmental organisations and private companies.

Trail: “Kampos tou Livadiou”
Hike begins at: 10:00 am

The trail’s difficulty level is 1 (easy), it has a distance of 3 km and the hike will last approximately 2 hours. During the hike, members of the “Pandoteira” project team will inform us about the unique geology of Troodos, its flora and fauna, and its environmental significance.

Points of interest

The trail will offer us stunning views of the Chromio River, the Solea Valley, Morphou Bay, and the peak of Chionistra. We will walk under the shade of ancient black pine trees, while the path will allow us to observe the Cyprus Cedar, which is endemic to Cyprus and exists nowhere else in the world.

Lastly, a few short stops will enable us to observe points of geological and natural interest. Here are some relevant fun facts:

• Cyprus is home to a total of 143 recorded endemic plant species, 92 of which are found in Troodos and nowhere else in the world.
• At the top of Troodos, there are outcropping rocks of the deepest layer of a fragment of oceanic crust and the Earth’s upper mantle, an ophiolite complex, which was formed 92 million years ago, several kilometers below sea level.

This educational hike will be led by Terra Cypria.

Aim

The Conference aims to inform stakeholders, including representatives from policy makers, governmental departments, non-governmental organizations, coastal local authorities, researchers, and Pandoteira project partners, regarding the importance of evaluating and adopting soft coastal protection solutions, in the context of Nature-based Solutions.

The Conference will be held in English, with parallel translation (English to Greek and Greek to English).

This initiative has received the support from the Priority Actions Programme / Regional Activity Centre (PAP/RAC), which is one of the six Regional Activity Centres of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP), itself part of the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).

In this workshop, participants will explore methods for integrating a green perspective in marketing. They will examine how they can develop business plans that promote their products and services, but also relate to the values of sustainable development and environmental protection.

The workshop’s main aim is to equip participants with knowledge they can apply to start a business or strengthen their competitiveness within the framework of their current business activities. Through this workshop, participants will learn the basic marketing principles and apply practical tools to create strategic marketing plans. In this context, emphasis will be given to the need to integrate environmental awareness at every stage of the marketing planning.

The games will be officially launched at an event organized by Frederick University.

The event is organized in the framework of the End-of-year exhibition by the Department of Arts and Communication. The educational games will be on display throughout the duration of the exhibition (2 – 5/7/2024). For more information about the exhibition follow this link.

The boardgames were designed and produced following the ‘Frederick University Living Lab’ (FULL) pedagogical initiative, which gives students the opportunity to collaborate with social institutions, public bodies and private companies.

The goal of the educational games

The goal of the interactive educational games is to inform school children (over the age of 9) about the Mediterranean monk seal. Through their interaction with these board games, children learn, among other things, about the life cycle of the Mediterranean seal, its diet, as well as the dangers and threats it faces. In addition, children are informed about the actions taken by DFMR to protect both the species and its habitat. Lastly, the children learn how they themselves can practically contribute to the protection of the Mediterranean seal and the marine environment.

The games – under the supervision of the DFMR – will be incorporated into the activities of the Pandoteira project, which focus on raising awareness among the public on the importance of the Natura 2000 network.
