Launch of new educational games

Two of the Pandoteira project partners, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research (DFMR) and Frederick University, joined forces in an effort to create educational boardgames dedicated to the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus).

The games were handed to the Director of the DFMR, Mrs Marina Argyrou, during an official launch event which was organised by Frederick University on July 3rd, 2024. Participants at the event had the opportunity to view the boardgames that the university students designed and created.

The goal of the interactive educational games is to inform school children (over the age of 9) about the Mediterranean monk seal. Through their interaction with these board games, children learn, among other things, about the life cycle of the Mediterranean seal, its diet, as well as the dangers and threats it faces. In addition, children are informed about the actions taken by DFMR to protect both the species and its habitat. Lastly, the children learn how they themselves can practically contribute to the protection of the Mediterranean seal and the marine environment.

The games – under the supervision of the DFMR – are now incorporated into the activities of the Pandoteira project, which focus on raising awareness among the public on the importance of the Natura 2000 network.
