On Saturday May 16, our team organised a number of activities for children and adults in Kritou Terra and at the Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre, which is located in the village. The activities included:

• Bird ringing and bird release
• Interactive games
• Crafts
• Kremiotis waterfall hike
• Activities with invertebrates
• Workshop with local products and village tour
• Bird feathers’ workshop.

On Sunday, May 17, the celebration moved to the Smigies picnic site in Akamas. The day began with a bird-ringing demonstration and continued with an educational hike along the “Smigies” nature trail. During the hike, participants had the opportunity to learn about the importance of the flora and fauna of the area, which is part of the Natura 2000 network.

The activities were coordinated by Terra Cypria, and were executed with the support of representatives from the: Department of Environment, Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, Game and Fauna Service, Department of Forests, BirdLife Cyprus and Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus.

What is Natura 2000?

The Natura 2000 European Ecological Network is a wide European network of protected natural areas for species of flora, fauna, birds and habitats. Apart from protecting nature and biodiversity, the Natura 2000 network offers us great benefits. For example, the network helps mitigate climate change, protects us from natural disasters, contributes to food security, offers us purified water, attracts visitors thus contributing to the support of regional economies, while at the same time supports full time jobs.

The Pandoteira project

The Pandoteira project deals with the management of the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus, with the purpose of making the network more effective and functional, as well as sustainable. The project is co-funded by the EU’s LIFE Programme, it is coordinated by the Department of Environment and has 13 other associated beneficiaries from Public Bodies, Universities, NGOs and private companies. Saturday May 16th – Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre (Kritou Terra)

From 9:30 to 13:00, you will be able to participate in a number of activities at the Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre, in Kritou Terra.

The day’s activities include:

1.Bird ringing and bird release

Join us for a live bird ringing demonstration, featuring birds that were cared for and rehabilitated at the Game and Fauna Service’s Rehabilitation Centre, as well as birds from the area! Learn about the importance of bird ringing in monitoring bird populations, as well as the efforts made to rehabilitate them. The activity will conclude with the release of the birds.

2.Interactive games

A series of interactive games focusing on the unique species of Cyprus. Participants will learn about the Cypriot flora and fauna, while discovering endemic species and the importance of protecting local ecosystems.

3.Crafts

We use materials from nature and recyclable items to create environmentally themed crafts.

4.Kremiotis Waterfall hike (registration required)

Join us on this short (1.5 km) hike to discover the Kremiotis Waterfall, while enjoying the refreshingly green landscape. We will learn about the rich biodiversity of the area, whilst unwinding with the amazing sounds of birdsong by the stream. The hike will lead us to the 25-meter-high waterfall—an ideal spot for relaxation.

The trail is circular and lasts approximately 1 hour.

Departure at 10:30 from the waterfall parking area. The hike will conclude at 11:30 with our return to the starting point.

Difficulty level: 1 (easy). Not recommended for children under 6 years old.

5.Activities with invertebrates (registration required)

Through interactive activities, children get to know freshwater invertebrates, learn how to identify them, and study their ecology. Suitable for children over 6 years old.

The activity will take place at Kremiotis Waterfall.

6.Workshop with local products and village tour (registration required)

Make traditional olive pies with guidance from a village resident in the courtyard of the tavern “To Mylari”, in Kritou Terra.

While the olive pies are baking, you’ll have the opportunity to join a guided tour of the village. Join us to learn about the cultural heritage of Kritou Terra and the life of its residents.

7.Bird feathers’ workshop

In this workshop, children study bird feathers to understand their function. They learn how feathers help with flight, insulation from weather conditions, and communication between species. Suitable for children over the age of 6.

Sunday May 17th – Smigies picnic site (Akamas)

The day will begin at 9:00 with bird ringing and bird release, followed by a hike.

1.Bird ringing and bird release

Bird ringing helps us protect birds by tracking their migration and survival. Want to see how it’s done? Come to this ringing demonstration!

2.Educational hike at Smigies nature trail (registration required)

Follow us along the impressive “Smigies” trail in Akamas, on a route with diverse landscapes and panoramic views across the entire peninsula. During this educational hike, experts will talk to us about the protected area of Akamas, its geology, as well as the region’s flora and fauna. We will also learn about sea turtles and Mediterranean monk seals as we take in the view toward Lara – one of the most important habitats for sea turtles in the Mediterranean.

For the hike, you have two options:

1. The longer route (7.5 km, duration 3 hours) also takes us to an abandoned magnesium mine and an old furnace.
2. The shorter route (2.5 km, duration 1.5 hours) is suitable for families with children over 6 years of age. An interactive activity for children will be offered on this route.

Both routes start at 9:45 from the Smigies picnic site.

The hike for both routes will conclude with our return to the picnic site, where you will be able to enjoy some refreshments.

Difficulty level: 2 (medium). Not recommended for children under 6 years old.

Within the framework of the Pandoteira project, a boat trip was organized on April 20, 2026, for the EU Nature Directors to the islet of Agios Georgios in Akamas. The aim of the trip was to highlight the ecological value of the area. The excursion started from the small harbour in Latsi and included a tour around the islet of Agios Georgios, as human presence on the islet is not permitted.

During the journey, an officer of the Game and Fauna Service informed the visitors about the ornithological importance of Agios Georgios, as the islet is nesting ground for the Shag subspecies Gulosus aristotelis desmarestii – a subspecies found only in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. It is an impressive seabird that depends on rocky islets and steep rocky coasts for nesting, as well as on the sea for feeding. The specific subspecies is protected and is listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive.

Visitors were also informed about the threats Shags are facing in Cyprus, such as risks from rodents that prey on their eggs and chicks, disturbance from boats approaching too close to the rocks, as well as incidental capture in fishing gear (bycatch). Additionally, as Shags hunt fish by diving tens of meters underwater, they are also at risk of becoming entangled in fishing nets or abandoned fishing nets (ghost nets), which can lead to drowning.

Using binoculars, the visitors had the opportunity to observe Shags, as well as Yellow-legged Gulls (Larus michahellis), which also nest on the islet. The boat trip concluded with a short visit to the Blue Lagoon, where participants admired the crystal-clear blue waters.

This activity, combined with the other actions carried out during the Nature Directors meeting, contributed significantly to understanding the importance of protecting the Akamas Peninsula.

During the hike, members of the Pandoteira project team, from Terra Cypria, Frederick University and BirdLife Cyprus, took on the educational part of the hike. More specifically, they informed participants about the protected areas of Cyprus, the flora, fauna and avifauna that can be found in the specific protected area, as well as its unique geology.

The route offered stunning views of Akrotiri and the Limassol salt marsh, as well as Pentadaktylos, Kyrenia and Morphou Bay. We walked among junipers and endemic golden oaks, while observing the wildflowers of the season, such as orchids. We also learnt about the different bird species of the area, even though the heavy wind did not allow us to observe them. Lastly, a few short stops gave us the opportunity to observe points of natural and geological interest.

The protected areas “SAC Madari – Papoutsa” and “SPA Vounokorfes Madaris – Papoutsas”, within which the trail is located, are home to 40 of the 131 endemic plant species of Cyprus. In addition, the areas are also home to many migratory and other important bird species that nest there.

The entire route around “Teisia tis Madaris” trail presents igneous rocks and is one of the most impressive appearances of this type of rock. The rock formations, which are almost vertical, emerge like walls on the mountain peaks.

Apart from raising awareness about the flora and fauna of the area, the aim of the hike was also to promote good practices among organized and independent hikers.

Trail “Teisia tis Madaris”
Hike begins at 10:00 am

During the hike, members of the Pandoteira project team will inform us about the protected areas of Cyprus, the flora, fauna and avifauna that can be found in the specific protected area, as well as its unique geology.

The trail is considered easy. It’s a 3 km long, circular trail and it will take us approximately 2 hours to complete the hike, including the information stops.

Points of interest

The route offers stunning views of Akrotiri and the Limassol salt marsh, as well as Pentadaktylos, Kyrenia and Morphou Bay. We will walk among junipers and endemic golden oaks, while observing the wildflowers of the season, such as orchids. We will also learn about the different bird species of the area and we might be lucky enough to observe certain species, such as the Bonelli’s Eagle, the Cyprus Wheatear, the Cyprus Jay, the Cyprus Coal Tit and the Short-toed Treecreeper.

Lastly, a few short stops will allow us to observe points of natural and geological interest. Did you know that…

Στην Κύπρο υπάρχουν 7 θαλάσσιες περιοχές εντός του Δίκτυου Natura 2000, οι οποίες χαρακτηρίζονται ως Ειδικές Ζώνες Διατήρησης (ΕΖΔ): η Περιοχή Πόλις-Γιαλιά, ο Ακάμας, τα Μουλιά, το Ακρωτήριο Άσπρο-Πέτρα του Ρωμιού, το Κάβο Γκρέκο, τα Νησιά, καθώς και η υπεράκτια περιοχή Ωκεανίς.

Η θαλάσσια προστατευόμενη περιοχή (ΘΠΠ) του Κάβο Γκρέκο βρίσκεται εντός της Ειδικής Ζώνης Διατήρησης του Κάβο Γκρέκο (CY3000005) στο ανατολικότερο άκρο του νησιού και το Κακοσκάλι εντός της Ειδικής Ζώνης Διατήρησης της Χερσόνησου Ακάμα (CY4000010) βορειοδυτικά της Κύπρου γύρω από το νησάκι του Αγίου Γεωργίου. Και οι δύο περιοχές παρουσιάζουν σημαντικά θαλάσσια ενδιαιτήματα όπως λιβάδια Ποσειδωνίας και υφάλους με δάση του μακροφύκους Cystoseira spp. Τα ενδιαιτήματα αυτά, υποστηρίζουν τη συνύπαρξη ποικίλων οργανισμών, παρέχοντας τους χώρους προστασίας, τροφοληψίας και αναπαραγωγής.

Προστασία και Διαχείριση των ΘΠΠ Κάβο Γκρέκο και Κακοσκάλι

Το Κάβο Γκρέκο κηρύχθηκε ως Θαλάσσια Προστατευόμενη Περιοχή (ΘΠΠ) το 2018 με Υπουργικό Διάταγμα (Κ.Δ.Π. 115/2018), ενώ το Κακοσκάλι το 2019 (Κ.Δ.Π. 258/2019). Το Κακοσκάλι μάλιστα είναι και η πρώτη ΘΠΠ που δημιουργήθηκε στην Κύπρο μέσω της πρωτοβουλίας του Τοπικού Συνδέσμου Επαγγελματιών Αλιέων Λατσιού, σε συνεργασία με τη ΜΚΟ Ενάλια Φύσης και υποστηρίχθηκε από το Τμήμα Αλιείας και Θαλασσίων Ερευνών με σκοπό την προστασία της θαλάσσιας βιοποικιλότητας της περιοχής.

Για να μπορούν να συνυπάρχουν οι ανθρώπινες δραστηριότητες με την προστασία των οικοσυστημάτων, οι περιοχές αυτές χωρίζονται σε επιμέρους ζώνες με διαφορετικούς κανόνες χρήσης (ζώνωση). Συγκεκριμένα, για λόγους προστασίας των αλιευτικών πόρων και των υδρόβιων οργανισμών απαγορεύτηκε η αλιεία με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο, στις θαλάσσιες περιοχές που ορίζονται ως «Πυρήνας» και «Ουδέτερη Ζώνη» στη Θαλάσσια Προστατευόμενη Περιοχή Κάβο Γκρέκο και Κακοσκάλι. Οι κάτοχοι επαγγελματικής άδειας παράκτιας αλιείας εξαιρούνται της απαγόρευσης αλιείας στην «Ουδέτερη Ζώνη» (Χάρτης 1α και β).

Μελέτη ιχθυοπανίδας στα πλαίσια του έργου Πανδώτειρα

Στο πλαίσιο του έργου Πανδώτειρα έγινε μια τετραετής έρευνα από την εταιρεία AP Marine Environmental Consultancy Ltd σε συνεργασία με το Τμήμα Αλιείας και Θαλασσίων Ερευνών για τα είδη που βρίσκονται στις περιοχές αυτές και την αποτελεσματικότητα των μέτρων διαχείρισης της αλιείας (Δες το σχετικό παραδοτέο εδώ).

Η μελέτη που υλοποιήθηκε, κατέγραψε τη βιοποικιλότητα, την αφθονία των ιχθυοπληθυσμών και τον αντίκτυπο των ισχυόντων διαχειριστικών κανονισμών μέσω συνδυασμού οπτικών καταμετρήσεων (visual census), δειγματοληψίας αλιευμάτων και στατιστικών αναλύσεων.

Τα βασικά ευρήματα υποδεικνύουν ότι οι ΘΠΠ παρέχουν σημαντικά καταφύγια για τους ιχθυοπληθυσμούς, με στοιχεία που δείχνουν αυξημένη βιομάζα και ποικιλότητα στις προστατευόμενες ζώνες σε σύγκριση με τις μη προστατευόμενες περιοχές. Αυτό ισχύει ιδιαίτερα για τα εμπορικά σημαντικά είδη, όπου η αφθονία των ενήλικων ατόμων και οι πυκνότητες βιομάζας ήταν κατά μέσο όρο πολύ υψηλότερες εντός των προστατευόμενων περιοχών. Η μελέτη αναδεικνύει επίσης εποχιακές και ετήσιες διακυμάνσεις στους ιχθυοπληθυσμούς.

Προκλήσεις και απειλές για τις δύο αυτές ΘΠΠ

Παρά το γεγονός ότι οι αλιευτικές δραστηριότητες μέσα στις ΘΠΠ περιορίζονται βάση της νομοθεσίας, για σκοπούς προστασίας των ενδιαιτημάτων, της θαλάσσιας βιοποικιλότητας και των αλιευτικών πόρων, οι περιοχές αυτές αντιμετωπίζουν διάφορες απειλές.

Η παράνομη αλιεία είναι μια σημαντική πρόκληση, καθώς παρατηρήθηκαν αλιευτικές δραστηριότητες εντός των ζωνών πλήρους απαγόρευσης αλιείας.

Η παρουσία ξενικών ειδών, όπως το λεοντόψαρο, αποτελούν επίσης απειλή για τη βιοποικιλότητα, καθώς είναι θηρευτές μεγάλου εύρους ενδημικών ειδών ψαριών, μειώνοντας έτσι δραστικά τους πληθυσμούς τους (τα λεοντόψαρα δεν έχουν ουσιαστικούς φυσικούς εχθρούς στη Μεσόγειο).

Επιπλέον, η αγκυροβόληση σκαφών σε ρηχά σημεία είναι ακόμα μια σημαντική πίεση που λαμβάνει χώρα σε καθημερινή βάση.

Βιώσιμη Διαχείριση και Προστασία των ΘΠΠ

Το έργο Πανδώτειρα, με τη μελέτη αυτή, ανέδειξε τη σημασία των περιοχών αυτών και των πιέσεων που δέχονται και συνέβαλε στον ευρύτερο στόχο της προώθησης της βιώσιμης αλιείας και της διατήρησης του θαλάσσιου περιβάλλοντος στην Κύπρο.

Η περαιτέρω μελέτη των περιοχών αυτών είναι κρίσιμη για τη διαχείριση περιοχών Natura 2000. Οι κανόνες λειτουργίας των ΘΠΠ πρέπει να τηρούνται, για τη διαφύλαξη και την προστασία των περιοχών αυτών. Επιπλέον, η ενίσχυση των μηχανισμών επιβολής της νομοθεσίας και η συμμετοχή των ενδιαφερόμενων μερών στη διαχείριση των περιοχών αυτών, δύναται να οδηγήσει σε σημαντικά οφέλη για τα οικοσυστήματα και τις κοινότητες της περιοχής.

Ο Μεσογειακός Θαλασσοκόρακας εξαρτάται από τις απρόσιτες ακτογραμμές και νησίδες του νησιού για φωλεοποίηση και από τη θάλασσα για τροφή. Ωστόσο, η ζωή του δεν είναι πάντα ήρεμη, αφού αντιμετωπίζει σοβαρές απειλές που θέτουν σε κίνδυνο το μέλλον του στο νησί μας. Λόγω των απειλών που αντιμετωπίζει και της μείωσης του ευρωπαϊκού πληθυσμού, το είδος ανήκει στο Παράρτημα Ι της Οδηγίας για τα πουλιά.

Τι απειλεί τον Θαλασσοκόρακα;

1.Τρωκτικά

Οι Μεσογειακοί Θαλασσοκόρακες φωλιάζουν σε απόκρημνους βράχους και απομονωμένες νησίδες – μέρη που φαίνονται ασφαλή. Δυστυχώς, τρωκτικά, όπως οι αρουραίοι, μπορούν να φτάσουν ακόμη και σε αυτά τα δυσπρόσιτα σημεία. Εκεί κατασπαράζουν αυγά και νεοσσούς, καταστρέφοντας συχνά ολόκληρες φωλιές. Για ένα είδος που γεννά λίγα αυγά κάθε χρόνο, οι απώλειες αυτές είναι ιδιαίτερα σοβαρές.

2.Ενόχληση από τουριστικά σκάφη

Η Κύπρος φημίζεται για τα καθαρά, γαλάζια νερά της, προσελκύοντας σκάφη αναψυχής, δύτες και εξερευνητές των ακτών. Αν και αυτό ωφελεί τον τουρισμό, μπορεί να δημιουργήσει έντονο στρες στα φωλιάζοντα θαλασσοπούλια. Σκάφη που πλησιάζουν υπερβολικά κοντά σε βράχους και νησίδες μπορεί να αναγκάσουν τους ενήλικες θαλασσοκόρακες να εγκαταλείψουν τις φωλιές τους, αφήνοντας αυγά ή νεοσσούς εκτεθειμένους σε θηρευτές ή ακραίες θερμοκρασίες και καιρικά φαινόμενα.

3.Παρεμπίπτουσα αλιεία

Ο Μεσογειακός Θαλασσοκόρακας είναι εξαιρετικός δύτης, κυνηγώντας ψάρια κάτω από την επιφάνεια της θάλασσας. Στην Κύπρο έχουμε καταγράψει βουτιές σε βάθη μέχρι και 40 μέτρα. Ωστόσο, αυτή του η ικανότητα μπορεί να αποδειχθεί μοιραία. Τα πουλιά συχνά μπλέκονται κατά λάθος σε αλιευτικά δίχτυα ή πιάνονται σε παραγάδια κατά τη διάρκεια της αναζήτησης τροφής. Αυτή η «αόρατη» απειλή συμβάλλει στη μείωση των πληθυσμών του είδους σε ολόκληρη τη Μεσόγειο.

4.Εγκαταλελειμμένα αλιευτικά δίχτυα (Ghost nets)

Τα εγκαταλελειμμένα ή χαμένα αλιευτικά δίχτυα, γνωστά ως ghost nets, αποτελούν μια ακόμα απειλή για τον Μεσογειακό Θαλασσοκόρακα. Παραμένοντας στη θάλασσα για χρόνια, συνεχίζουν να παγιδεύουν θαλάσσια ζωή χωρίς έλεγχο. Κατά τη διάρκεια της κατάδυσης και της αναζήτησης τροφής, τα πουλιά μπορεί να μπλεχτούν στα δίχτυα αυτά, αδυνατώντας να απελευθερωθούν και συχνά οδηγούνται σε πνιγμό. Η παρουσία των ghost nets επιβαρύνει περαιτέρω ένα ήδη ευάλωτο είδος και εντείνει τις πιέσεις που δέχεται ο πληθυσμός του στη Μεσόγειο.

Τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε εμείς;

Πώς μπορούμε όμως εμείς, ως πολίτες, να συμβάλουμε στην προστασία αυτού του ιδιαίτερου είδους; Με το να μοιραζόμαστε την ακτογραμμή με σεβασμό.

Ο Μεσογειακός Θαλασσοκόρακας αποτελεί μέρος της φυσικής κληρονομιάς της Κύπρου εδώ και αιώνες. Η προστασία του δεν σημαίνει τον αποκλεισμό του τουρισμού ή της αλιείας, αλλά τη σωστή διαχείρισή τους. Με τον έλεγχο των τρωκτικών, τον σεβασμό των περιοχών φωλεοποίησης και τη σωστή ενημέρωση μπορούμε να διασφαλίσουμε ότι αυτό το εμβληματικό θαλασσοπούλι θα συνεχίσει να κοσμεί τις ακτές μας.

Πώς βοηθά το έργο Πανδώτειρα τον Θαλασσοκόρακα;

Το έργο Πανδώτειρα υλοποιεί στοχευμένες δράσεις για την προστασία του Μεσογειακού Θαλασσοκόρακα στην Κύπρο, βασισμένες στη γνώση και την επιστημονική παρακολούθηση.

Κάθε χρόνο η Υπηρεσία Θήρας και Πανίδας μαζί με το BirdLife Cyprus, πραγματοποιούν καταγραφές αναπαραγωγής σε νησίδες και απόκρημνους βράχους όπου φωλιάζει το είδος. Με αυτό τον τρόπο παρακολουθούμε την κατάσταση και την τάση του πληθυσμού. Παράλληλα, δαχτυλιώνουμε πουλιά ώστε να μπορούν να τα αναγνωρίσουν, τόσο οι ερευνητές στο πεδίο, όσο και το κοινό. Αυτό μας επιτρέπει να μελετούμε την επιβίωση και τις μετακινήσεις των πουλιών. Επιπλέον, με την τοποθέτηση καμερών στις φωλιές, καταγράφουμε τη συμπεριφορά τους χωρίς όχληση, ενώ με τη χρήση δορυφορικών πομπών μπορούμε να κατανοήσουμε καλύτερα τις θαλάσσιες διαδρομές, τις περιοχές τροφοληψίας και τις απειλές που αντιμετωπίζει το είδος.

Στο άμεσο μέλλον, το έργο Πανδώτειρα θα προχωρήσει στην τοποθέτηση ενημερωτικών πινακίδων σε βασικές περιοχές για την ευαισθητοποίηση του κοινού, καθώς και σε δράσεις διαχείρισης του πληθυσμού των αρουραίων από σημαντικές περιοχές φωλεοποίησης. Στόχος μας είναι να ενισχύσουμε ουσιαστικά την προστασία του είδους.

Για τα πουλιά, οι υγρότοποι είναι απολύτως απαραίτητοι. Σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, εκατοντάδες είδη πτηνών εξαρτώνται άμεσα από τα υγροτοπικά οικοσυστήματα, είτε για την αναπαραγωγή τους είτε ως σταθμούς ξεκούρασης και ανεφοδιασμού κατά τη μετανάστευση. Ιδιαίτερα τα μεταναστευτικά πουλιά δεν μπορούν να ολοκληρώσουν τα μακρινά τους ταξίδια χωρίς την ύπαρξη ασφαλών και λειτουργικών υγροτόπων.

Υγρότοποι στην Κύπρο

Η Κύπρος κατέχει έναν εξαιρετικά σημαντικό ρόλο σε αυτό το παγκόσμιο δίκτυο μετανάστευσης. Βρίσκεται σε στρατηγικό σημείο στο ανατολικό μεταναστευτικό πέρασμα μεταξύ Αφρικής, Ευρώπης και Ασίας, γεγονός που την καθιστά έναν από τους πιο κρίσιμους σταθμούς για τα πουλιά στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο. Μέχρι σήμερα έχουν καταγραφεί στο νησί πάνω από 400 είδη πουλιών, εκ των οποίων η πλειονότητα είναι μεταναστευτικά ή διαχειμάζοντα, ενώ μεγάλο ποσοστό αυτών εξαρτάται άμεσα ή έμμεσα από τους υγρότοπους.

Οι υγρότοποι της Κύπρου, όπως οι Αλυκές Λάρνακας, η Αλυκή Ακρωτηρίου, η Λίμνη Παραλιμνίου, η Λίμνη Ορόκλινης, τα εποχικά έλη, τα φράγματα και τα ποτάμια, φιλοξενούν κάθε χρόνο δεκάδες χιλιάδες πουλιά. Είδη όπως τα φλαμίνγκο, οι αγριόπαπιες, οι ερωδιοί, οι χαλκόκοτες, τα παρυδάτια πουλιά, αλλά και σπάνια αρπακτικά, βασίζονται σε αυτά τα οικοσυστήματα για τροφή και ανάπαυση. Για ορισμένα είδη, οι υγρότοποι της Κύπρου αποτελούν έναν από τους ελάχιστους διαθέσιμους σταθμούς σε ολόκληρη τη μεταναστευτική τους διαδρομή.

Η συμβολή του έργου Πανδώτειρα

Αναγνωρίζοντας αυτή τη σημασία, το έργο Πανδώτειρα υλοποιεί στοχευμένες δράσεις για την προστασία και αποκατάσταση των υγροτόπων, στο πλαίσιο της ενίσχυσης του δικτύου Natura 2000 στην Κύπρο. Η ομάδα μας μελετά τις οικολογικές απαιτήσεις ειδών πτηνών που εξαρτώνται άμεσα από υγροτοπικά οικοσυστήματα, όπως οι αλυκές και οι λίμνες, ώστε να εντοπιστούν οι κρίσιμες ανάγκες τους σε τροφή, νερό και χώρους φωλιάσματος. Παράλληλα, καταγράφουμε και αξιολογούμε τους υγρότοπους και εκπονούμε Σχέδια Δράσης που καθοδηγούν τη μακροπρόθεσμη διαχείρισή τους.

Οι γνώσεις αυτές μεταφράζονται σε πρακτικά μέτρα διατήρησης, που περιλαμβάνουν την εφαρμογή συγκεκριμένων παρεμβάσεων σε υγροτόπους όπως οι Αλυκές Λάρνακας και η Λίμνη Παραλιμνίου, με στόχο τη βελτίωση της κατάστασης των ενδιαιτημάτων και τη στήριξη των πληθυσμών των πουλιών. Παράλληλα, η δράση μας συμβάλλει στη δημιουργία ενός μόνιμου συστήματος παρακολούθησης ειδών και οικοτόπων, επιτρέποντας την αξιολόγηση της αποτελεσματικότητας των μέτρων και την έγκαιρη αντιμετώπιση νέων απειλών.

Η σημασία της Κύπρου δεν περιορίζεται μόνο στον αριθμό των ειδών που φιλοξενεί, αλλά και στο γεγονός ότι λειτουργεί ως μια πραγματική «γέφυρα ζωής» ανάμεσα σε 3 ηπείρους. Η απώλεια ή η υποβάθμιση των υγροτόπων του νησιού θα είχε επιπτώσεις όχι μόνο σε τοπικό, αλλά και σε διεθνές επίπεδο, επηρεάζοντας πληθυσμούς πουλιών σε πολλές χώρες.

Παρά την ανεκτίμητη αξία τους, οι υγρότοποι της Κύπρου αντιμετωπίζουν σοβαρές απειλές, όπως η ρύπανση, η κλιματική αλλαγή, η μείωση των υδάτινων πόρων και η ανεξέλεγκτη ανάπτυξη. Η προστασία και η σωστή διαχείρισή τους είναι ζωτικής σημασίας, όχι μόνο για τα πουλιά αλλά και για τον άνθρωπο, καθώς οι υγρότοποι συμβάλλουν στη ρύθμιση του νερού, στον περιορισμό των πλημμυρών και στη διατήρηση της οικολογικής ισορροπίας.

Η Παγκόσμια Ημέρα Υγροτόπων μας υπενθυμίζει ότι η Κύπρος έχει ιδιαίτερη ευθύνη, αλλά και μια μοναδική ευκαιρία, να προστατεύσει αυτά τα πολύτιμα οικοσυστήματα. Μέσα από έργα όπως το Πανδώτειρα, τίθενται τα θεμέλια ώστε οι υγρότοποι να συνεχίσουν να στηρίζουν τη ζωή των πουλιών και τη φυσική κληρονομιά της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου για τις επόμενες γενιές.

Monthly waterbird counts, conducted systematically for more than two decades by the Game and Fauna Service and BirdLife Cyprus, show a decline in the species’ population in Cyprus. Specifically, from 2013 to the present, a decrease of around 14–31% has been observed. A summary of the species’ status in Cyprus was recently presented at the 4th International Flamingo Symposium, which took place in Italy from 10–15 November 2025.

Possible factors behind the significant decline of the species on our island include frequent droughts, inflows of poor-quality water leading to reduced food availability, pressures from development, and incompatible activities around the wetlands.

As part of the Pandoteira Project, a ten-year project co-funded by the EU’s LIFE Programme, gaps in knowledge are being addressed regarding the specific dietary, breeding, and resting requirements of certain species, as well as the quantification of the threats they face. One of the species studied by the project is the Greater flamingo.

Filling these knowledge gaps will enable the adoption of targeted conservation actions to improve the status of the species in specific Special Protection Areas, Natura 2000 sites designated for wild birds. As a result, conservation objectives can be achieved both for the species and for the Natura 2000 Network sites in which they occur.
