Members of the Pandoteira project team from Terra Cypria, visited the village of Salamiou on May 6th and Kouklia on May 17th, 2022.
The purpose of these two visits was to inform members of the local community about the Pandoteira project, the project’s actions and what actions are scheduled to take place within the Natura 2000 network in their area.
Apart from the Pandoteira project presentation, our team had the opportunity to inform the local population about the importance of the Natura 2000 network.
In addition, participants were introduced to the concept of clustering and the commonalities and characteristics of the Natura 2000 sites which form their cluster and surround their communities. In more detail, the special characteristics of their cluster were presented, including designating species and habitats, their conservation status and the geographical expansion of the cluster’s Natura 2000 sites.
Moreover, a representative of the Water Development Department made an introductory presentation concerning the Water Reservoirs and River Protection Zones. More specifically, the presentation focused on their importance and how these zones are on some occasions intertwined with Natura 2000 areas.
During these two visits members of the local population expressed their interest in various topics, such as:
- The Management Plans for the various Natura 2000 sites.
- The concept of the management structures and the Natura 2000 management unit to be established through the Pandoteira project.
- Private Land Management within the network.
- The need to involve local communities in the management of Protected Areas.
The Pandoteira team will remain in contact with the local communities and provide them with any support they need in their effort to actively participate in the protection of the Natura 2000 network.
