The Pandoteira project, together with the Pissouri Local Authority, organised an event titled: “Natura 2000: Generating awareness among stakeholders”. The event took place on Saturday April 9th, 2022 and began with a hike at the Genesis Aphrodite’s Trail, followed by a presentation at the Pissouri Elementary school.
Purpose of this event
The purpose of this event was to:
- Inform the members of the Local Authority, as well as the local population, about the “Pandoteira” project and what actions are scheduled to take place within their area.
- Generate awareness concerning the importance of the Natura 2000 network.
- Acquaint the members of the Local Authority with the potential of using hiking as a tourist activity, thus encouraging the flow of local and foreign visitors to the area.
An experienced tour guide joined us at the Genesis Aphrodite’s Trail making the hike a special and memorable experience for all participants.
Following the hike all participants gathered at the Pissouri Elementary school, where the importance of the Natura 2000 network was presented. The topics of most interest to the Local Authority and local population were private land use and Natura 2000 site management.
In addition, our tour guide, Mr Antonis Kazazis, gave an inspiring talk on how nature tourism could be used to increase the flow of local and foreign visitors to the area.

Future steps
The Local Authority expressed their interest in learning more about private land management, hence a new meeting will be scheduled. The Pandoteira project team will remain in close contact with the Local Authority.
The presentation was led by Terra Cypria-the Cyprus Conservation Foundation, which is the lead partner of Action E2.1: “Set up awareness-raising and information activities for targeted stakeholders” and Task 1: “Systematically inform the stakeholders on the progress made by the project”.
