Members of the Pandoteira project Team from Terra Cypria, organised an event at the Kathikas Community Council on May 25, 2023. The event was titled: “Natura 2000: awareness raising and stakeholder information”.
The purpose of the event was to inform the residents of Kathikas and the surrounding communities about the Pandoteira project and its activities. More specifically, people from the communities that fall within the cluster of Akamas joined the event, in order to learn about the cluster’s characteristics and the importance of the Natura 2000 network.
During the meeting it was highlighted that the Natura 2000 network is governed by the philosophy that man must coexist with nature and that the network does not prohibit any activities, within its boundaries. Projects and activities taking place in these areas, however, must ensure the safeguarding of rare species and habitats. Reference was also made to how the land is used, the Akamas Local Plan and how the latter affects the area.
Residents emphasised the need to support the countryside, thus tackling urbanization and providing incentives to young people in order to encourage them to stay in these communities. All in all, it was a particularly constructive meeting.
